before, i go on and post my thoughts on my blog i just want to share with you one of my favorite paintings. as much as the painting is depressing, i couldn't help but notice that it exudes a sense of comfort; that perhaps there is nothing to fear about death. see how the maiden wraps her arms around death, perhaps accepting it for its totality and its magnificence and the truths within and beyond it. but perhaps, the reason why i love this painting so much is that it shows a woman's true feelings. she shares her deepest and darkest secrets with a man. secrets that perchance have been corrupting her very existence. |
i agree.... you're right... the woman does seem like she's embracing death and the reality of our fate-- we all die. but at the same time, if who she is hugging is death, don't you think it's ironic as well that the artist would paint a woman hugging death instead of a man? woman gives birth to life and yet hugs death. so... this painting is a representation of life AND death.... hmmm... ...just another perspective on the piece...
